After the gang-rape and death of a 19-year-old Dalit in UP, BJP MLA Surendra Singh of the state said that rape can stop only if women have sanskar or culture. Moreover, he believes the responsibility of parents to inculcate this sanskar into their daughters.

Such incidents (like rape) can be stopped only with sanskar, not with shasan or talwar.

A reporter asked the BJP MLA, Surendra Singh, about his thoughts on the reason for rape cases to continue despite people saying that it was β€˜Ram Rajya’. MLA Singh then referred to the Hathras case in his comments. According to him, the government is certainly committed to protecting people. However, rape cases apparently can only stop if families ensure that their daughters have good values. He added that the government and these good values will ensure a better India.

Harsh criticism followed his comments as he essentially pointed fingers at rape victims’ and survivors’ parents for rapes.

Last year, he also called Nathuram Godse killing Mahatma Gandhi a mistake. He also called the CM of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, β€˜cruel-hearted’.
