On Sunday, three men shot dead Shakti Malik, a 37-year-old Dalit leader at his residence in Purnia District, Bihar. His wife, Khushboo Devi, filed and FIR against RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav. She alleges that the murder was due to a political conspiracy: Malik was expelled from RJD earlier, but planned to go against them as an independent candidate in elections.
In the morning at around 6 AM, three men arrived on bikes and entered Shakti Malik’s house in Purnia. Then, they shot him thrice in his head while he was sleeping and killed him. After that, they fled from the spot.
Sunil Kumar Mandal, a senior police officer reported that they found a country-made pistol and an empty cartridge at the crime scene.
Video shows Yadav attempting to bribe Malik for party ticket in election
The Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate was going to be Shakti Malik, a Dalit. However, he recently left the RJD. Instead, he was going to be an independent candidate. Therefore, he would be going against Tejashwi Yadav in the elections.
JD(U) spokesman Rajiv Ranjan Prasad told reporters that they often voiced out about the dynasty rule in politics and the increasing corruption in RJD. These allegations were not new. Moreover, Yadav apparently did not have enough experience to lead the party, and he especially could not deal with alliances. Hence, there was some bad blood between the two.
After the murder, a video of Malik accusing RJD’s Tejashwi Pratap Yadav went viral. Malik accuses Yadav of demanding Rs 50 lakhs from Malik to get the party ticket for the Ranigunj constituency. In reply, Shakti Malik said he would tell him about his decision later. Yadav then used a casteist remark against him. Furthermore, he gave death threats to Shakti Malik.
Police file FIR against Yadav, five others
Prasad thus believes that the family’s allegations are only firmer now, after Malik’s murder. Khushboo Devi filed an FIR with the Bihar police against six people now: Yadav, along with Mahua MLA Tej Pratap Yadav, senior RJD leader Anil Kumar Sadhu, along with the unidentified killers.
However, the RJD called the FIR a political move. They also said that the allegations are baseless.
Police are investigating the case.
