Schizophrenia – an illness unknown to the public
I switched on my television and found Jawaani Jan-E-Man from Namak Halaal streaming on a music channel. It has always been one of my favorite songs and Parveen Babi has always been an icon. Babi’s life has been an enigmatic one and what is even more mysterious is her experience of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is an illness which very few of us know. So I tried to find out more about it.
What is schizophrenia?
It is a disorder where a person goes through unrealistic experiences. There is decrement in the engagement in daily activities plus there is the presence of disorganised behaviour or speech. Though we might think that it happens to some, it might happen with you or your kin.
Can you identify it in others?
Your loved one might isolate himself and inhabit compulsive behaviour. They may possess a belief that there is a specific meaning behind an ordinary event or lack interest in activities. Paranoia and hallucination are common too. Also, schizophrenic people often lack emotional response. Parveen Babi would sit in a corner, with a knife in her hand, clad in filmy attire and scared to death. She would often talk about her loneliness to her loved ones. This was her “call for help”.
What can I do to help?
You can take your loved one to a psychiatrist and get them treated. Treatment is usually lifelong. It includes a mix of psychotherapy, medicines and care services.
In this way, you can help those you care about. Life is indeed precious and it becomes beautiful when we know how to help the people whom we love. Babi’s life is an extraordinary example of how love, hard work and determination can move past barriers and illnesses.
