Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tamil Nadu, removed the book Walking with the Comrades by Arundhati Roy from their syllabus after ABVP objected to it, citing βcontroversial contentβ.
The book describes the battle between the Indian state and the armed revolutionaries, the Maoists. According to ABVP though, Roy glorifies Maoists. They stated that the book contains controversial content. However, it was in the syllabus for students of BA English and literature in the third semester, and has been since 2017. It is only now that ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) raised their voices against it.
After receiving a complaint from ABVP organisers last week, the university formed a committee of deans and members of the board of studies. They decided to withdraw the book as it may be βinappropriateβ for students. They henceforth replaced it with My Native Land: Essays on Nature by M.Krishnan.
