Punjab passed three laws that counter the three farm bills which the Centre passed last month, amidst chaos that only led to larger protests earlier. On October 10, the state assembly of Punjab took only a few minutes to pass a resolution as well as three bills against the three farm bills.

The Punjab Assembly passed the following bills today:

  1. Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Special Provisions and Punjab Amendment Bill 2020
  2. Essential Commodities (Special Provisions and Punjab Amendment) Bill 2020
  3. Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance
  4. Farm Services (Special Provisions and Punjab Amendment) Bill 2020

Anyone who buys or sells wheat below the MSP (minimum support price) will have to pay a fine and face jail for at least three years. Moreover, the laws also let authorities punish those who harass or abuse farmers into selling below the MSP. Furthermore, the laws attempt to stop the hoarding and black-marketing of food grains.

Also, the government offered relief to the farmers with holdings of up to 2.5 acres against their land being attached.

The Governor VP Singh Badnore is yet to sign the bills. If he chooses not to do so, then the bills will reach the President.
