Police detained PK Dutta, a former deputy inspector general of Assam, after his name came up in connection in the case of a police recruitment exam paper leak. Cops held him at the Indo-Nepal border on Tuesday.
Dutta began avoiding the police when CID’s investigation grew deeper. He apparently owns a chain of luxury hotels, tea gardens, 100 bighas of land, a couple of flats, and other property as well. Assam police recently found out that he was hiding in Nepal.
Around 66,000 candidates were writing the exam for becoming police sub-inspectors when authorities halted the exam once they detected the scam. Thereafter, cops arrested him at the Indo-Nepal border from where the West Bengal police took him. The Assam police will soon take him into custody to bring him back to the state.
BJP leader involvement in the case
Regarding the case of the leaked exam paper, an Assam BJP leader, Diban Deka, was also accused. However, a week after going in to hiding, he himself surrendered to the police. They arrested him later and took him to Guwahati.
The scam may land the BJP party into trouble. Moreover, there is an assembly election next year. Congress demanded that the case be examined by a sitting judge of the Gauhati High Court as they claimed several BJP leaders were involved in the scam.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, feeling rather humiliated, by the incident ordered a thorough investigation into the case.
