Two unidentified, masked assailants on bikes shot dead Manish Shukla, a BJP leader and aide to MP Arjun Singh, on October 4 in Titagarh, North 24 Parganas. The party thereafter called for a 12-hour bandh on October 5 in Barrackpore.
Manish Shukla was at a tea stall at around 8:30 PM. He was talking to a few people there after returning from a meeting in Habra with other BJP leaders. Then, two people on bikes with masks fired 12 shots from near the Titagarh police station. The bullets hit Shuklaβs chest and forehead. Although he was taken to the Apollo hospital, doctors declared him dead at 9:20 PM. After that, BJP supporters protested outside the police station for a short while.
On October 5, BJP activists called for a 12-hour bandh. Blocking the roads in Barrackpore resulted in traffic stopping completely in the area. They also burnt tyres. Police are now guarding the place heavily. Meanwhile, Mukul Roy, national VP of BJP, went to meet Shuklaβs family.
BJP accuses TMC of Manish Shukla’s murder, start 12-hour bandh
Following his death, BJP accused TMC for the murder of Shukla. The national general secretary of the party, Kailash Vijayvargiya posted a video on Twitter and called out Barrackpore police chief Manoj Verma and JCP Ajay Thakur. In it, Vijayvargiya said that BJP MP Arjun Singh claimed that CM Mamata Banerjee hired police to kill him. He furthermore demanded a CBI probe and asked for an investigation into the role of police. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar also called the state home secretary and DGP Virendrra to the Raj Bhavan.
Meanwhile, Arjun Singh, the BJP MP, tweeted that Shukla sacrificed his life for Bengal. He too accused TMC and the police for it. Arvind Menon, a senior BJP leader, accused the ruling party of conspiring to murder publicly and providing safety to criminals.
The accusations come especially because Shukla previously worked with TMC and joined BJP only in 2019. In 2018, there was a similar attack on him. However, TMC says that the allegations are false and fights within BJP resulted in the murder of Manish Shukla. A senior police officer confirmed that they started an investigation already.
