Uttar Pradesh police arrested a journalist from Kerala and three others while they were travelling to Hathras and now charged them under the UAPA. The police also seized their devices.
Journalist, three more, arrested, charged with UAPA
The journalist’s name is Siddique Kappan. He contributed to a popular website and is the secretary of the Kerala Union of Working Journalist at the Delhi branch. He was travelling with Atiq-ur-Rehman from Muzaffarnagar, Masood Ahmed from Bahraich and Alam from Rampur. They were going towards Hathras to cover the case of the gang-rape and murder of the 19-year-old Dalit.
The police said that they received a tip-off about ‘suspicious’ people coming from Delhi to Hathras. When the police found the group of these four at a toll booth in Mathura, they stopped and arrested them. They seized their mobile phones, a laptop, as well as some literature. According to the FIR that the police filed, the men revealed they had links with the PFI and its associate organisation CFI. Earlier, the PFI protested against the CAA as well.
They also found a pamphlet that said ‘I am not India’s daughter’. They have thus registered the case for all four of them under Section 17 of the UAPA – for ‘raising funds for a terrorist act’.
The IWPC (Indian Women Press Corps) and the Press Association released a statement in which they said the police have no proof for their claims. They furthermore demanded that they release all seized equipment. The two organisations also slammed the UP government for trying to silence journalists. The KUWJ also wrote a similar letter to PM Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath.
