Haryana police used lathis to disperse the crowd of farmers in Kurukshetra who began a protest against three farm-related ordinances. They were marching towards a rally ground. Meanwhile, other farmers were stopped from reaching the venue.
Farmers in Haryana and Punjab have been protesting against
- The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020
- The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and
- Farm Services Ordinance, 2020,and the essential commodities (Amendment) ordinance 1955
The farmers in the dharna chanted slogans, demanding for withdrawal of the changes immediately. They fear that they may not get a minimum support price for crops due to the ordinances. Therefore, they want the government to introduce a new law that can assure them of it if they do not withdraw them in the first place.
Government imposes Section 144 to stop rally
Meanwhile, the district administration imposed Section 144 to stop such gathering. In fact, the government says the ordinances will not affect at all. However, the farmers claim that is not the case.
Chief Gurnam Singh supported the farmers for raising their voices. He believes that if action is not taken, it will destroy the peasants.
Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the leader of Opposition in BJP-led Haryana government, has also extended his support to the farmers. He also claims that the ordinances will remove the farmers’ protection.
