A 13-year-old girl drowned in a river after saving her friend who was slipping into a waterfall. The incident occurred at around 2:30 PM on Sunday, August 2, in Resubelpara, Meghalaya.
The girl’s name was Mima Patiasa K Sangma. She was with three friends at the time of the incident. They went to the waterfall at the Daram Gurakol stream, near Rongkuchong village.
When they went there and stood near the edge of the waterfall, one of her friends lost her balance. She began slipping. Instead of thinking about herself, Mima tried to help her friend immediately.

Although she managed to secure her friend’s safety, she could not do so for herself. Hence, she fell into the river too. Unfortunately, she could not get out as the current was strong and there were rocks along the path of the waterfall.
Later, officials recovered her body from the downstream side of the river and performed a post-mortem. Then, they handed her over to her family.
Superintendent of Police, Abraham T Sangma, of North Garo Hills reported the incident.
Rinaldo K Sangma, a resident of Resubelpara, lauded the girl’s bravery and selflessness. He also expressed his support for the family.
