Bangladesh is going to introduce death penalty for rape cases. Last week there was widespread outrage in Bangladesh after a footage went viral on social media. The protestor carried signs reading “Hang the rapists” and “No mercy to rapists”.
In Bangladesh many rape cases go unreported as women fear of harassments. Last year, Bangladesh recorded 5,400 rape cases. This year during the first nine months more than 950 women were raped in Bangladesh.
In this case, the woman in the viral video had been repeatedly raped. she was attacked in the south-eastern district of Noakhalim. Once the video went viral, eight men were arrested.
Another rape case occurred in last week at Bangladesh. A woman was allegedly gang raped by several members. They belong to the student wing of the ruling party. The crime took place in a hostel in the northern district of Sylhet.
Initiative taken by government regarding continuous rape cases in Bangladesh
The government has directly responded to the protest in an authorative way. It is likely to issue an ordinance amending the women and child Repression Prevention Act. Details of the amendment is not available right now.
The current law states maximum punishment in rape cases is life imprisonment. In such cases where victim dies, capital punishment could not happen. However, now the government accepted the proposal regarding proper trials in rape cases. From now onwards, trial will take place in a speedy manner. Furthermore, the court will permit capital punishment.
