A family killed a 21-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman as they were cousins who wanted to get married against the family members’ wishes. The woman’s brother and the couple’s uncle were involved in their murder and also the burning of the bodies.
Cousins wanted to marry against wishes, beliefs of family
The family of five brothers and their children lived in Durg, Chhattisgarh. The cousins, 21-year-old Srihari and 20-year-old Aishwarya, were children of two brothers. Earlier in September, they eloped, after which the family reported that they went missing. The police then traced them to Chennai and followed the necessary procedures to bring them back home on October 7. Despite their return though, the family still refused to accept them wholly as it went against their beliefs.
Uncle, sibling of woman poison and burn couple
Later, on Saturday, October 10, the woman’s brother, Charan Koppal, and the couple’s uncle K Ramu, poisoned them. They also set the bodies on fire and left them at the Shivanth riverbank. Durg IG Vivekanand Singh reported that the police received information about the burning in the afternoon on October 11.
A senior officer taking part in the investigation reported that during interrogation, the family members confessed to killing the cousins for their wish to marry each other. The cops registered a case under sections 302 (murder), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison), 201 (disappearance of evidence and giving false information) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC.
