Four associations and 34 leading Bollywood producers filed a case against four news channels, its anchors, unknown defendants and social media platforms for defamation as well as invasion of privacy. The cases represent not only Bollywood as a whole, but its individual members too. This case came after several popular news channels in fact degraded Bollywood and accused its members of taking drugs.

In the recent past, news channels put Bollywood in a bad light. Especially since Rhea Chakraborty landed in jail, anchors accused several members of the industry of being corrupt and taking drugs. In fact, the court itself called out news channels for their irresponsible reporting of the case Sushant Singh Rajput.

Long-term smear on industry, say Bollywood plaintiffs

DSK Legal filed the case on behalf of the Bollywood associations who sued the publications for creating or publishing irresponsible, demeaning and defamatory remarks. News channels essentially conducted their own investigations earlier. Moreover, the cases demand that the media should not be able to hold trials or make their own decision about Bollywood members. Furthermore, they should not be able to invade the right to privacy of anyone associated with the industry.

The case explained that Bollywood is one of the most resourceful industries for India, in terms of tourism and employment as well. Amidst the pandemic, it was already suffering great losses. Hence, the defamation was an additional burden and affected the industry in the long term as well.

Lastly, they asked the defendants to take down all defamatory content against Bollywood. In fact, the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994, does not permit channels to publish such content in the first place. Hence, it is completely justified of the Bollywood industry to ask for the content to be erased.

However, the Bollywood industries and associations clarified that they do not want to completely mute media. This applies to the case of SSR too. However, they should abide by the laws.
